Thousand Splendid Suns – Khalid Hosseeni

The story of two women who struggle for their life in Afganistan during the period of unrest and turmoil. They lose their loved ones, their homes and what not.

Its the story of two women Mariam and Laila both wives to the same man, Laila being the age of Mariam’s daughter. The novel is all about what the women have to face throughout their life. This is one of a kind story that i read and it made me think in a never before way about the women. I thought slightly on the same ideas but it never occured to me that a woman, a wife, a mother would go to such an extent just to make her mother, father, husband, daughter, son happy. The daughter leave their home, the home they have been living in for almost a couple of decades just because the society wants so. They leave everything behind them and land up in an unfamiliar territory. How it feels I dont know because I would not be able to experience that ever.

I would not have read this book if it had not been recommended to me by someone. But after reading it i went through a completely different experience.

“The teenage Mariam — the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy man, who is ashamed of her existence — is quickly married off to a much older shoemaker named Rasheed, a piggy brute of a man who says it embarrasses him “to see a man who’s lost control of his wife.”

Rasheed forces Mariam to wear a burqa and treats her with ill-disguised contempt, subjecting her to scorn, ridicule, insults, even “walking past her like she was nothing but a house cat.” Mariam lives in fear of “his shifting moods, his volatile temperament, his insistence on steering even mundane exchanges down a confrontational path that, on occasion, he would resolve with punches, slaps, kicks, and sometimes try to make amends for with polluted apologies and sometimes not.”

The life of the novel’s other heroine, Laila, who becomes Rasheed’s second wife, takes an even sharper trajectory toward ruin. Though she is the cherished daughter of an intellectual, who encourages her to pursue an education, Laila finds her life literally shattered when a rocket — lobbed by one of the warlord factions fighting for control of Kabul, after the Soviet Union’s departure — lands on her house and kills her parents.

Her beloved boyfriend, Tariq, has already left Kabul with his family — they have become refugees in Pakistan — and she suddenly finds that she is an orphan with no resources or friends. When she discovers that she is pregnant with Tariq’s child and learns that Tariq has supposedly died from injuries sustained in a rocket attack near the Pakistan border, she agrees to marry Rasheed, convinced that she and her baby will never survive alone on the streets of Kabul.”

How starbucks saved my life… a review

How starbucks changed my life

Michael Gates Gill

How starbucks changed my life is the story of a man who has a wonderful career and every thing in life. He was born to rich parents lived in the best part of New York in a mansion with 35 rooms and as a family tradition went to Yale for education. He didn’t have to wait for his job after education as one of his old friends helped him get a job at J. Walter Thompson advertising Company. He rises to the position of the CEO with his skills and efforts and then one fine day he is fired by a superior whom he had hired and helped to get a senior position than his.

After being fired when he looks back he realizes that all that he did for his work whether it was working long hours or staying away from family or even leaving them to get onto a project on Christmas was never enough and no one cared and as he grew old and was no use to the JWT he was fired. That brought him to the streets and all he could think was how it can happen to him. He starts his own company falls in love with another woman and has a kid with her and eventually when his former wife knows about this they separate and even his 4 children get annoyed with him. He runs his company for some time but as time passes the business gets slow and slow and eventually it dries out. This person was a coffee lover and used to visit Starbucks often to have his coffee. And it was this starbucks which offered him a job when he desperately needed one.

Though it was nowhere in comparison to his old job but still there was something in this job which was entirely different form the previous ones. No one was the boss at starbucks all were partners and every one was treated with respect whether it was the customers or employees. He was the only white guy in his store and this was the first time he saw the other side of the coin otherwise he had never known that there was a world like this right there in coexistence with him. His stay at starbucks teaches him to enjoy life and brings out his real self who is a funny guy and loves to connect with people and enjoys coffee a lot. It is these three qualities that make him the star of that store and the only person till date to get 5 stars in his review. His perspective to life changes as he gains experience in the store and he gets to learn a lot from the other who worked along with him. He feels sorry for the person he was but on the other hand is grateful for the change that happened to him and made him a better accepted person.

Love story by Erich Segal

Love story by Erich Segal is a love story as the name suggests which has been made into a block buster with the same name and is also been re made in Bollywood [Indian film industry] with the name “Kwahish”. Although the hindi movie was a flop and not at all upto the mark of the original works.

The book is a small one and once started i could not think of putting it down. I read it in just two sittings. The story is so loving and so much passionate that i even felt like crying. I just would wait till the end of my life for such love.

BEING IN LOVE MEANS NEVER HAVE TO SAY SORRY

My experiences with the book were good… I had more than 150 pages to read at 2 am in the morning and had class in morning at 10 but still i read whole of it. The end is heart breaking…. How can such things happen…. i guess even the god doesn’t know… The part i hated the most was the stubbornness of Oliver Barret Jr. and Oliver Barret Sr. They both love each other but still they just don’t want to express and neither of them is ready to say sorry… That reminds me that I also havent told my Dad explicitly that i love him… and I would be doing it ….  Over all a great read…
Probably one of the best love stories ever told, Love Story is one romantic novel that is sure to move you. Erich Segal has done a brilliant job in portraying two characters with which an entire generation could identify themselves. Given here is a short summary of the novel.

Love Story revolves around the lives of two young college lads, whose love for each other was immortal. Oliver Barrett, heir to the Barrett fortune and legacy and Jennifer Cavilleri, daughter of a poor baker who does not own a huge bank account but has lots of love. Oliver was expected to follow in his father’s huge footsteps, Jennifer, music major was to go on and study in Paris. But when they met, the sparks flew, and we get involved with them as their love grows deep and strong. Oliver turns his back on his family and fortune to marry Jenny. Jenny gives up her dreams of Paris and being a musician. They are happy with each other in their lives and the stable flow of income that is enough to sustain them. But life can be cruel and Jenny is diagnosed with leukemia. With just a few days to live, the novel speaks about the emotional pain they both go through.[source]

HACK ATTACK [Convert a straight lan cable to patch in 2 minutes]

This about making a patch or cross over cable if u have many straight spare ones lying around as was the case with me. I needed a patch cable to network my pc and notebook but had left my patch cable at one of my friends. This is a simple 2 minute hack which would allow you to convert a straight cable to patch.

Requirements:-

Straight LAN cable [the ones that connect routers and modems to your computer]

A pair of scissors or a Wire stipper [ I would recommend good ones becuse we wud be cutting wires]

Tape [ you might want to cover up the lose ends and exposed wires ]

Cut the cable from the middle. We only need 4 wires the orange pair and green pair.

strip the wire pairs about 1 cm

connect the solid green to solid orange and connect the stipped green to stripped orange and u are done.

This wont take u more than 5 minutes even if you are a noob.

Now use tape if u want. I left mine as such.

Connect the two computers using this wire.

Goto network connections and select appropriate network adapter then goto its properties and then select tcp/ip and assign an ip address in range 192.168.1.x

where x is any number between 1 and 255

do the same with other computer too but this time choose some other value for x.

Now we need to set up out computer for p2p networking.

We need to follow this on both computers.

In network connections left side pane click set up small home or office network then next just select the third option in the lists and keep going nexting. [sorry for very crude instructions no time…. wiring from college lab ;)] will edit it to add more detail once i have time…

Restart both the computers and Ping if u get a reply u are doneand congratz to u.

If not trouble shoot just google it or mail me. I wud be glad to help.

My PERFECT WORLD

Well ppl what to say about this game i cant think of right now. This is my first MMORPG [massively multiplayer online role playing game]. I played it for the first time when i was touring my country for my college Interviews. I am thankful to SIN who introduced me to this game. I play many characters my first being Neena which i lost i dont know how. Various others i play are harsh[EA] Mee2[EP] and McMeoW [WF]. I learned the game the hard way. Made lot of unneccesarry expenses and got messed up many times and keep doing it. I found this game very interesting more over the guilds are lot helpful. I have been into many guilds with my main player that is harsh but none i found satisfactory till i got into Entourage. Its awesome and i mean it. I wont be leaving this guild for anything. This is the best i have had of the perfect world. A recommendation though… if u play many characters place them in different guilds so u have large no of friends… at least i like many friends… I have been through tough times too in the game. The worst when my stats were messed up as an EA [harsh] then one of the friends @ANGEL@ helped me out of the blue. I now in a position that i can help new ones and i don’t leave a single chance to help others. One advice tho is that spend carefully and look for the materials lol…..

I wud be sticking to this game for long… cant tell how long but will stay around to help…

I am thankful to all in game friends and my GM’s and all others who helped me.

I’ll be there for u…. just pm me.

Kalyway 10.5.2 penultimate Install ;)

First of all what’s with the post title man!

Well i cant say that its my best and successful install of mac os leopard on my XPS 1210 and i might mess up again (Nth + 1 time ;)) so i thought to name it as such.

My config

Dell xps 1210

CPU 1.83

FSB 533 RAM 1024 Dual channel

All works except for the camera and card reader.

I got SLEEP

I got Dual Cores [work around]

I got sound.__________________________________________

My procedure is ….

Boot from 10.5.2 DVD [kalyway which can be found on tbp]

– vanilla kernel ( kernel + ACPI FIX)

– nvidia driver NVInject Laptop [my nvcap for external is

– efi mbr

After installation, we need to boot “safely” with cpus=1 and fsb=166 ( for the choopy audio, ONLY on 667Mhz MB ),

you can add it to your com.apple.boot.plist.

AFTER INSTALL:

what we have:

-QE working

– wifi/ethernet working

– bluetooth working

– sleep working

– Powermanagement.

what we DON’T have:

– Dual core.

– audio from speakers.

when booted, you download the following list of files :

– AppleHDAPatcher

– sigmatel9221.txt  [find both in rar here]

– Powermanagement.bundle (from this attachment on this message, posted by others before on this topic)

– AppleACPIPlatform.kext ( comes from another topic on this forum, it’s iAktos ACPI kext, on the attachement)

when download finished. firstly use AppleHDAPatcher with the sigmatel9221.txt explained before on the topic.

reboot, you will have sound from speakers ^^.

delete your /System/Library/Extensions.mkext.

repair permissions of your disk, and reboot.

you will have Powermanagement with the icon battery status ^^.

AFTER MODIFICATIONS:

what we have:

-QE working

– wifi/ethernet working

– sound (only on jack output)

– bluetooth working

– sleep working

– audio from speakers/jack.

what we DON’T have:

– Dual core.

So, finally, the dual core ^^. I think that all that have tried on the m1210 have seen that, when you boot without cpus=1, 2 things

can happen randomly, you can get a “unknown sigfpe code 1” at boot (in this case your computer reboots) or you can get your system to boot, but unusable because of extreme lag, IN THAT CASE : PUT YOUR COMPUTER TO SLEEP after booting, then wake

him up, and the system will then work smoothly WITH BOTH CORES ACTIVE ^^

now the glitch is u need to sleep it everytime but that can be cumersome as the muse keeps freezing every second so i got u the keyboard shortcuts for sleep option+command+eject[F12]

found it here

FINALY:

what we have:

-QE working

– wifi/ethernet working

– sound (only on jack output)

– bluetooth working

– sleep working

– Powermanagement.

– audio from speakers/jack.

– Dual Core working.

I guess XPS 1210 is the most used hackintosh ever 😉

From Smilies to Emoticons ;-)

The National Telegraphic Review and Operators Guide in April 1857 documented the use of the number 73 in Morse code to express “love and kisses” (later reduced to the more formal “best regards”). Dodge’s Manual in 1908 documented the reintroduction of “love and kisses” as the number 88. Gajadhar and Green comment that both Morse code abbreviations are more succinct than modern abbreviations such as LOL.[1][2] Typographical emoticons were published in 1881 by the U.S. satirical magazine Puck. In 1912 Ambrose Bierce proposed “an improvement in punctuation — the snigger point, or note of cachinnation: it is written thus \___/! and presents a smiling mouth. It is to be appended, with the full stop, [or exclamation mark as Bierce’s later example used] to every jocular or ironical sentence”.[3] Emoticons had already come into use in sci-fi fandom in the 1940s,[4] although there seems to have been a lapse in cultural continuity between the communities. An early instance of using text characters to represent a sideways smiling (and frowning) face occurred in an ad for the MGM movie Lili in the New York Herald Tribune, March 10, 1953, page 20, cols. 4-6. (See “Creation of 🙂 and :-(” section below.) In 1963, the “smiley face”, a yellow button with two black dots representing eyes and an upturned thick curve representing a mouth, was created by freelance artist Harvey Ball. It was realized on order of a large insurance company as part of a campaign to bolster the morale of its employees and soon became a big hit. This smiley presumably inspired many later emoticons; the most basic graphic emoticon that depicts this is in fact a small, yellow, smiley face. In a New York Times interview in April 1969, Alden Whitman asked writer Vladimir Nabokov: “How do you rank yourself among writers (living) and of the immediate past?” Nabokov answered: “I often think there should exist a special typographical sign for a smile — some sort of concave mark, a supine round bracket, which I would now like to trace in reply to your question.” [5] Several Internet websites —such as BT’s Connected Earth[6]— assert that Kevin Mackenzie proposed -) as a joke-marker in April 1979, on a message board called MsgGroup. The idea was to indicate tongue-in-cheek — the hyphen represented a tongue, not a nose. Others used 🙂 for tongue-in-cheek, with the colon representing teeth. Also used was -:) to indicate sticking out your tongue, in derision or anger. Although similar to a sideways smiling face, the intended interpretation was different and this does not appear to have inspired the later smileys. Creation of 🙂 and 🙁 The creator of the original ASCII emoticons 🙂 and :(, with a specific suggestion that they be used to express emotion, was Scott Fahlman;[7] the text of his original proposal, posted to the Carnegie Mellon University computer science general board on 19 September 1982 (11:44), was considered lost for a long time. It was however recovered twenty years later by Jeff Baird, from old backup tapes.[8] 19-Sep-82 11:44 Scott E Fahlman 🙂 From: Scott E Fahlman I propose that the following character sequence for joke markers: 🙂 Read it sideways. Actually, it is probably more economical to mark things that are NOT jokes – given current trends. For this, use 🙁 Graphical replacement In Web forums and instant messengers, text emoticons are often automatically replaced with small corresponding images, which came to be called emoticons as well. Similarly, in some versions of Microsoft Word, the Auto Correct feature replaces basic smileys such as 🙂 and 🙁 with a single smiley-like character. Originally, these image emoticons were fairly simple and replaced only the most straightforward and common character sequences, but over time they became so complex that the more specialized emoticons are often input using a menu or popup windows, sometimes listing hundreds of items. Some of these graphical emoticons do not actually represent faces or emotions; for example, an “emoticon” showing a guitar might be used to represent music. Further, some instant messaging software is designed to play a sound upon receiving certain emoticons. An August 2004 issue of the Risks Digest (comp.risks on USENET) pointed out a problem with such features which are not under the sender’s control: It’s hard to know in advance what character-strings will be parsed into what kind of unintended image. A colleague was discussing his 401(k) plan with his boss, who happens to be female, via instant messaging. He discovered, to his horror, that the boss’s instant-messaging client was rendering the “(k)” as a big pair of red smoochy lips.[9] Emoticons are also commonly used in online computer games. The most common type of emoticon is the “smiley “ which is simply a cartoon-looking face showing a smile. This has evolved into a variety of different facial expressions including frowns, angry grimaces, blushing, crying, looks of surprise and thousands more. Emoticons have also expanded beyond simple cartoon facial expressions to a variety of still or moving images, including words, character actions, and images.[10]
