Thousand Splendid Suns – Khalid Hosseeni

The story of two women who struggle for their life in Afganistan during the period of unrest and turmoil. They lose their loved ones, their homes and what not.

Its the story of two women Mariam and Laila both wives to the same man, Laila being the age of Mariam’s daughter. The novel is all about what the women have to face throughout their life. This is one of a kind story that i read and it made me think in a never before way about the women. I thought slightly on the same ideas but it never occured to me that a woman, a wife, a mother would go to such an extent just to make her mother, father, husband, daughter, son happy. The daughter leave their home, the home they have been living in for almost a couple of decades just because the society wants so. They leave everything behind them and land up in an unfamiliar territory. How it feels I dont know because I would not be able to experience that ever.

I would not have read this book if it had not been recommended to me by someone. But after reading it i went through a completely different experience.

“The teenage Mariam — the illegitimate daughter of a wealthy man, who is ashamed of her existence — is quickly married off to a much older shoemaker named Rasheed, a piggy brute of a man who says it embarrasses him “to see a man who’s lost control of his wife.”

Rasheed forces Mariam to wear a burqa and treats her with ill-disguised contempt, subjecting her to scorn, ridicule, insults, even “walking past her like she was nothing but a house cat.” Mariam lives in fear of “his shifting moods, his volatile temperament, his insistence on steering even mundane exchanges down a confrontational path that, on occasion, he would resolve with punches, slaps, kicks, and sometimes try to make amends for with polluted apologies and sometimes not.”

The life of the novel’s other heroine, Laila, who becomes Rasheed’s second wife, takes an even sharper trajectory toward ruin. Though she is the cherished daughter of an intellectual, who encourages her to pursue an education, Laila finds her life literally shattered when a rocket — lobbed by one of the warlord factions fighting for control of Kabul, after the Soviet Union’s departure — lands on her house and kills her parents.

Her beloved boyfriend, Tariq, has already left Kabul with his family — they have become refugees in Pakistan — and she suddenly finds that she is an orphan with no resources or friends. When she discovers that she is pregnant with Tariq’s child and learns that Tariq has supposedly died from injuries sustained in a rocket attack near the Pakistan border, she agrees to marry Rasheed, convinced that she and her baby will never survive alone on the streets of Kabul.”

How starbucks saved my life… a review

How starbucks changed my life

Michael Gates Gill

How starbucks changed my life is the story of a man who has a wonderful career and every thing in life. He was born to rich parents lived in the best part of New York in a mansion with 35 rooms and as a family tradition went to Yale for education. He didn’t have to wait for his job after education as one of his old friends helped him get a job at J. Walter Thompson advertising Company. He rises to the position of the CEO with his skills and efforts and then one fine day he is fired by a superior whom he had hired and helped to get a senior position than his.

After being fired when he looks back he realizes that all that he did for his work whether it was working long hours or staying away from family or even leaving them to get onto a project on Christmas was never enough and no one cared and as he grew old and was no use to the JWT he was fired. That brought him to the streets and all he could think was how it can happen to him. He starts his own company falls in love with another woman and has a kid with her and eventually when his former wife knows about this they separate and even his 4 children get annoyed with him. He runs his company for some time but as time passes the business gets slow and slow and eventually it dries out. This person was a coffee lover and used to visit Starbucks often to have his coffee. And it was this starbucks which offered him a job when he desperately needed one.

Though it was nowhere in comparison to his old job but still there was something in this job which was entirely different form the previous ones. No one was the boss at starbucks all were partners and every one was treated with respect whether it was the customers or employees. He was the only white guy in his store and this was the first time he saw the other side of the coin otherwise he had never known that there was a world like this right there in coexistence with him. His stay at starbucks teaches him to enjoy life and brings out his real self who is a funny guy and loves to connect with people and enjoys coffee a lot. It is these three qualities that make him the star of that store and the only person till date to get 5 stars in his review. His perspective to life changes as he gains experience in the store and he gets to learn a lot from the other who worked along with him. He feels sorry for the person he was but on the other hand is grateful for the change that happened to him and made him a better accepted person.

Love story by Erich Segal

Love story by Erich Segal is a love story as the name suggests which has been made into a block buster with the same name and is also been re made in Bollywood [Indian film industry] with the name “Kwahish”. Although the hindi movie was a flop and not at all upto the mark of the original works.

The book is a small one and once started i could not think of putting it down. I read it in just two sittings. The story is so loving and so much passionate that i even felt like crying. I just would wait till the end of my life for such love.

BEING IN LOVE MEANS NEVER HAVE TO SAY SORRY

My experiences with the book were good… I had more than 150 pages to read at 2 am in the morning and had class in morning at 10 but still i read whole of it. The end is heart breaking…. How can such things happen…. i guess even the god doesn’t know… The part i hated the most was the stubbornness of Oliver Barret Jr. and Oliver Barret Sr. They both love each other but still they just don’t want to express and neither of them is ready to say sorry… That reminds me that I also havent told my Dad explicitly that i love him… and I would be doing it ….  Over all a great read…
Probably one of the best love stories ever told, Love Story is one romantic novel that is sure to move you. Erich Segal has done a brilliant job in portraying two characters with which an entire generation could identify themselves. Given here is a short summary of the novel.

Love Story revolves around the lives of two young college lads, whose love for each other was immortal. Oliver Barrett, heir to the Barrett fortune and legacy and Jennifer Cavilleri, daughter of a poor baker who does not own a huge bank account but has lots of love. Oliver was expected to follow in his father’s huge footsteps, Jennifer, music major was to go on and study in Paris. But when they met, the sparks flew, and we get involved with them as their love grows deep and strong. Oliver turns his back on his family and fortune to marry Jenny. Jenny gives up her dreams of Paris and being a musician. They are happy with each other in their lives and the stable flow of income that is enough to sustain them. But life can be cruel and Jenny is diagnosed with leukemia. With just a few days to live, the novel speaks about the emotional pain they both go through.[source]

SCIT GREEN IT

TECHIE KAUN 08??

SCIT GREEN IT

Considering the number students in our campus and the taking into account that each student has to have a laptop with him/her we arrive at a conclusion that we use a lot of power to power up our laptops and what would be better than knowing how one can prolongs one’s laptop’s battery life which tend to die after every year.

These following practices would not only provide longer running time on battery but will also be lowering the power wastage as we all know that the laptops of today are power hogs and most of the time that they are running the resources are under utilized.

BLACK is ever green*

Well black in reality is not a color. It actually is the absence of all colors and it is the only color on the desktop that requires the minimum amount of power to run. So go black. Get the black themes. Turn your desktops to black.

*applicable only to CRTs not LCDS [thanks to anon]

Use only what is needed

Most of the laptops today have far more crunching power than required for normal college related work [leave gaming]. So its recommended to use applications such as Rightmark CPU Clock Utility to run the computer at lower clock speeds to save power and prolong the battery run out time.

Don’t Sleep, Hibernate

When we put our computer to sleep it still uses some power to maintain the data in the ram. But Hibernate mode completely turns it off so its better to Hibernate the laptops if you are leaving it for a period of more than a few minutes.

Claude Shannon – The knight of Information Technology

Today we all use the internet, listen to the music, watch movies in digital formats and the space required to store it is so small that it would wa unimaginable in the past.

There is a constant exchange of information between people , on the networks and on the internet. This excange seems so obvious that we never think of what goes at the back of it to make it happen. This all seems to be an integral part of our lives now. All this exchange of information is due to the contribution of a single personality who established a relationship between mathematics and digital logic and laid down the algorithms and rules which dictate the terms which define the amount off space required to strore certain amount of information in the digital format and its tranfer limitation across the networks.

The information theory by Claude E. Shannon is comparable to the theory of relativity by Einstein but only it has the practicle proofs too. Shannon was also among the ones who helped in the devepoment of cryptography in digital form since the very days of its inception and was also a pioneer in the just started field of the Artificial intelligence.

The most inportant of his inventions was the ability to stroe in information in digital format which made the tranfer of information from one point to the other not only easy but much more reliable and less expensive. [The analog transmissions required amplifiers to boost the signals at regular intervals and the mjor disadvantage with that was that it also boosted the noise so the signal to noise ratio kept on increasing which remainds almost constant in the digital transmission.]

Shannon’s innovation helped boost the call quality and the distances it could reach and vrought down the price which took AT&T and Bell many steps forward at that time. He also proposed the idea of adding some redundant data to the actual data which allows for the reconstruction of the data if there is some loss of data at the recieving end. This is how we get flawless music and videos even fron the scratched discs.

Shannon had laid down these rules more thab 50 years back and it took such long time for the engineers and programmmers to implement these concepts. And as the time is passing by newer and better inplementations are coming into the picture.

Shannon also served his country very well by devicing methods to shoot down the German bombers as he developed algorithms for anti aircraft guns so that they cluld calculate the trajectory and shoot the bombers down.

Shannon was a fun loving personality. He was very much fascinated by juggling and some of his works includes the research on the Dynamics on keeping multiple objects in air simultaneously. He also helped NASA’s JEt propulsion lab in deep space communication. He also authored a book “Beat the Dealer” which made the casinos in Las Vegas change the rules for the game Blackjack. Shannon had many gadjets in his room which he himself stated as being useless.

Shannon did remarkable work in the field of mathematics and digital electronics but was never awarded the nobel prize the reason being that there was no nobel prize for mathematics. He however was awarded the Kyoto prize by Japanese constituted in late 1980’s which is considedred the nobel prize for mathematics.

Shannon suffered from Alzhimer in the last decade of his life and he finally lost his life to the ailment and left us all in February 2001. Shannon indeed was a knight in shining armor for the AT&T and BELL labs and many other communication giants like Qualcomm because of his work. Shannon is a legacy and if he would not have made the history then we still would have been living in history

HACK ATTACK [Convert a straight lan cable to patch in 2 minutes]

This about making a patch or cross over cable if u have many straight spare ones lying around as was the case with me. I needed a patch cable to network my pc and notebook but had left my patch cable at one of my friends. This is a simple 2 minute hack which would allow you to convert a straight cable to patch.

Requirements:-

Straight LAN cable [the ones that connect routers and modems to your computer]

A pair of scissors or a Wire stipper [ I would recommend good ones becuse we wud be cutting wires]

Tape [ you might want to cover up the lose ends and exposed wires ]

Cut the cable from the middle. We only need 4 wires the orange pair and green pair.

strip the wire pairs about 1 cm

connect the solid green to solid orange and connect the stipped green to stripped orange and u are done.

This wont take u more than 5 minutes even if you are a noob.

Now use tape if u want. I left mine as such.

Connect the two computers using this wire.

Goto network connections and select appropriate network adapter then goto its properties and then select tcp/ip and assign an ip address in range 192.168.1.x

where x is any number between 1 and 255

do the same with other computer too but this time choose some other value for x.

Now we need to set up out computer for p2p networking.

We need to follow this on both computers.

In network connections left side pane click set up small home or office network then next just select the third option in the lists and keep going nexting. [sorry for very crude instructions no time…. wiring from college lab ;)] will edit it to add more detail once i have time…

Restart both the computers and Ping if u get a reply u are doneand congratz to u.

If not trouble shoot just google it or mail me. I wud be glad to help.

Switching to CFLs A Personal Viewpoint

A Viewpoint

Just a few years ago when these light bulbs were becoming mainstream, it was really a toss up between spending the money for one of these or just getting a couple of dozen incandescent bulbs instead. But as sales of these new fangled bulbs increased, prices began to drop. And as of the day you read this article, it has now become more cost effective to stop using a regular bulb and switch over to energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs.

Whoever switches to compact fluorescents will save, perhaps, hundreds of dollars per year in electrical costs, depending on usage. Those are solid savings to be sure. But you cannot see it in your pocket, and you never will unless you calculate the savings bill by bill.  To see the dollar signs I mention above, you would need to add up the money over the course of the year!

In reality, it was always more cost effective to switch over, since CFLs last about 10 to 12 times longer than a regular incandescent bulb. The problem has always been between pocket money and saving money.

The biggest advantage to these bulbs is this. You can get these in package deals for less than 3 bucks a bulb, and they will last for years without needing to be replaced.  So, you won’t have to change them as often, and that’s the biggest advantage. Why…? Well, believe it or not, there are several hundred confirmed injuries every year resulting from someone changing a light bulb (particularly the bulbs that need to be reached by either a step stool or a ladder).  I mean, let’s face it folks, if you change a standard light bulb 2 or 3 times a year on a ladder or stool, imagine changing that same bulb once every 4 or 5 years.  You can see where I am going with this.

You see, I use CFLs, and they involve less hassle.  I rarely change them, and since they save me both time and money, these bulbs are the right choice for this guy!

One caution though… beware of cheap CFLs without warranty… Most of good brands come with 1 year replacement warranty and are available within 200 INR

CFLs come in many shapes and sizes. When purchasing CFLs, consult the seller for recommendations and consider the following:
• Choose the color temperature, if listed, that’s right for you; for example:
Approx. 2700K = Warm White (looks just like incandescent)
Approx. 5000K = Cool White (white/blue, often higher CRI)
• Choose the shape. CFLs are available in a variety of shapes to fit a range of lamps and lighting fixtures. See below on this page for the most popular CFL shapes.

• Match lumens to the incandescent being replaced. Lumens indicate the amount of light being generated. (Watts is a measure of energy use, not light strength.) To compare lumens and watts see chart below:

.Incandescent Watts….CFL Watt range… . . … .. Lumen Range

Limitations
Although CFLs are an excellent source of energy-efficient lighting, they are not always the best choice for all lighting applications. Here are a few limitations to consider:

* On/Off cycling: CFLs are sensitive to frequent on/off cycling. Their rated lifetimes of 10,000 hours are reduced in applications where the light is switched on and off very often. Closets and other places where lights are needed for brief illumination should use incandescent or LED bulbs.
* Dimmers: Dimmable CFLs are available for lights using a dimmer switch, but check the package; not all CFLs can be used on dimmer switches. Using a regular CFL with a dimmer can shorten the bulb life span.
* Timers: Most CFLs can be used with a timer, however some timers have parts which are incompatible with CFLs; to check your timer, consult the timer package or manufacturer. Using an incompatible timer can shorten the life of a CFL bulb.
* Outdoors: CFLs can be used outdoors, but should be covered or shaded from the elements. Low temperatures may reduce light levels – check the package label to see if the bulb is suited for outdoor use.
* Retail lighting: CFLs are not spot lights. Retail store display lighting usually requires narrow focus beams for stronger spot lighting. CFLs are better for area lighting.
* Mercury content: CFLs contain small amounts of mercury which is a toxic metal. This metal may be released if the bulb is broken, or during disposal. New ‘Alto’ CFL bulbs are now available with low-mercury content. These low-mercury CFLs are available at our online store. For more information about mercury and CFLs, see below.

Ahsans Computer Virus Trozan Fix

Recently I had big trouble with my computer as ….it was affected by Ahsan virus..

It changes my browser title to Ahsan’s….

I was not able to open my task manager or any other antivirus software

Whenever I tried to open any link containing the info. on the virus in my browser it closed with out any prompt.

It renames my computer n my documents to Ahsan’s computer n document

I was not able to update or install any other anti virus software.

It disables d command prompt.

I was not able to access my registry editor or any other registry explorer, etc.

Also show hidden file options in the folder options was not working.

The virus creates a file named home video.avi.exe on all my partitions.

Formatting and Reinstalling the windows also didn’t help either n I couldn’t find any concrete Sol. On internet as more all less all sol were regarding modifying the registry values lol (registry editor was disabled by the virus)

Finally I found the sol..fix is as follows :

Goto Run and type in cmd or command. Once at the command prompt type in “cd\” without the quotes to go to the root of the current drive. Then type “del <name.extension> /f /a /s /q”

The name extension of the file is csrss.exe. Delete it from all the root drives and then manual delete the file home video.avi.exe in all the drives.

If command Prompt is not working den go to folder options and disable hide protected operating system files…This will make the csrss.exe file visible on all the drives. Delete it manually and your system will b free from Ahsan virus.

Caution: While manually deleting the virus do not open the drives directly rather explore the drives or it will again spread to the primary drive and will disable the command prompt etc.

Information regarding this virus can be read on the following link
