Sri lanka Auto Drivers Against TATA Nano

Taxi drivers in Sri Lanka’s capital held up traffic today, demanding the government should stop allowing anymore use Tata Nanos on the streets that offer stiff competition to the ubiquitous three-wheelers.
Hundreds of three-wheel taxis choked parts of the city for over an hour to protest against a taxi company, linked to a ruling party politician, from using a fleet of Nanos.

The politician was seen at the wheel of a Nano with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the passenger seat this week after Nano Cab company launched the cheaper taxi service earlier this month.

The Federation of Self-Employees (FOSE) said their members would lose business if the Nano cabs were allowed to expand.

The cab company had said it wants to increase the current fleet of 45 to 200 by the end of the year.

FOSE said President Rajapaksa had promised in his election manifesto to grant them tax concessions to help reduce environment pollution caused by the Indian-made three wheelers, which have become the common man’s taxi.

The Nano service is offered at a lower price than air-conditioned cars and their fares are comparable to three-wheeler charges.

“we are going to lose our jobs and the Nano cabs will take over our taxi stands,” a spokesman for the protesters said.

Nano, although considered the world’s cheapest car, in Sri Lanka costs about Rs 3,81,204 (INR) and Rs 9,31,345 in Lankan Rupee ($8,500), nearly three times more than its cost in India.

Bangalore orders Google to stop Street View

http://s4.reutersmedia.net/resources/r/?m=02&d=20110621&t=2&i=443232492&w=460&fh=&fw=&ll=&pl=&r=2011-06-21T062229Z_01_BTRE75K0HQ100_RTROPTP_0_CEBIT

Google Inc has been ordered by city police to suspend its “Street View” service in the Indian IT hub of Bangalore, the company said on Tuesday, in the latest setback to its global mapping project that has been hit by privacy fears.

The technology giant has sent a fleet of cars around the globe to capture millions of images used with maps as part of its panoramic Street View service, but faces regulatory challenges from authorities across the world on data protection concerns.

“We received a letter from the commissioner of police regarding Street View. We are currently reviewing it and have stopped our cars until we have a chance to answer any questions or concerns the police have,” Google said in a statement.

The commissioner of police declined to elaborate on the reasons for the letter when contacted by Reuters.

Bangalore is the leading IT hub in Asia’s third-largest economy, where Google employs thousands nationwide and where global technology giants such as Microsoft, Yahoo and Intel also have offices.

Google began collecting images three weeks ago in Bangalore, the first Indian city targeted by Street View.

The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) said it will start accepting applications for new domain names from January 12 to April 12 next year, a move that will give organisations more options for branding themselves.

ICANN said internet domain names can consist of any word or words, in any language and any script, including Chinese or Japanese, giving unlimited options to internet users. Presently, it allows 22 suffixes such as .net, .com and .org.

ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) had approved the New gTLD Program during a special session held on Monday, 20 June 2011

Lokpal bill differences

http://static.ibnlive.com/pix/sitepix/06_2011/anna_govt_gfx_271x181.jpgThe civil society representatives and the Government were able to settle some disputes on Monday, but new differences have emerged ahead of the final Lokpal Bill Drafting Committee meeting on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has called for a meeting of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA), ahead of the all-party meet on the Lokpal issue. The Union ministers on the Lokpal Bill drafting committee will be meeting Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

The Government has clarified that only one Lokpal Draft Bill will be sent on to the Cabinet, and both sides have admitted that crucial differences still remain and a consensus is unlikely ahead of Tuesday’s final Lokpal meet.

Nokia N9 coming soon

Troubled smartphone giant Nokia has unveiled a range of new handsets including the company’s new flagship device, the N9. Featuring an ‘all-screen’ design, the phone replaces a home button with a universal ‘swipe’ gesture that takes users back to the devices main screen from wherever they are in its operating system.

Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia’s head of Design, said, “The details that make the Nokia N9 unique – the industrial design, the all-screen user experience, and the expressive Qt framework for developers – will evolve in future Nokia products.”

The company, has not yet, however, demonstrated any of the long-awaited Windows Phone handsets that it says it will release by the end of the year. Nokia chief executive Stephen Elop said “Earlier this year, we outlined a comprehensive strategy to change our course. Innovation is at the heart of our strategy, and today we took important steps to demonstrate a new pace of innovation at Nokia. It’s the beginning of a new era for Nokia.”

Village names itself Snapdeal.com

A village in northern India voted to change its name to Snapdeal.com Nagar, after an Indian startup installed water pumps in the town, showing how the power of philanthropy can work in strange ways.
The town, formerly named after the Hindu god Shiva, reportedly decided on the name change after Snapdeal, a leading Indian e-commerce company, installed fifteen hand-powered water pumps so that villagers would no longer have to walk nearly two miles to access clean water.

“It cost us $5,000 max, but it was quite life changing for residents there,” said Kunal Bahl, founder of the company, to CNN.

The villagers’ decision to rename the town was apparently spontaneous. “They just wanted to express their gratitude,” said Bahl.

Bahl said he hoped Snapdeal’s action would both highlight how the government is failing the rural poor and also inspire other Indian companies to take on philanthropic projects.

“India has about 640,000 incorporated companies,” he said. “Many are much larger and more resourced than us. Even if ten percent decided to do something like this, 64,000 villages would have clean water.”

Bahl said he intends to continue his company’s relationship with the town, with a plan to donate computers next on the agenda.

Facebook $100 Billion IPO in 2012

http://www.zoomstart.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/06/facebook.jpg

Facebook, the dominant internet social networking company, is making plans to go public early next year at a vertigo-inducing valuation of over $100 billion, CNBC reported Monday. The Palo Alto-based web phenom could file registration papers with the Securities and Exchange Commission as early as October.

In January, Facebook said it expected to cross the critical 500-shareholder mark this year, and if it finishes 2011 over the line, it must file quarterly and annual reports with the SEC within 120 days after the end of the year. At the time, Goldman, which had invested $450 million in Facebook, said the company was worth $50 billion.

Today, Facebook is trading at an implied valuation of $80 billion on private, secondary markets like SharesPost, where employees and early investors sell shares to “accredited investors,” including banks and individuals worth over $1 million.

Facebook employees – youngest, stressed but satisfied

http://facebookemoticons.biz/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/facebook-emoticons.jpg

Employees at Facebook, the famous social networking site, are the youngest and most stressed out workers in US tech companies, but are considered to be the most satisfied.

On the other hand, Google staffers are the best paid within the technical market and have low levels of stress. Of course it’s no wonder their staff are so relaxed, Google provides every employee with gourmet meals, massages, game rooms and other perks that aren’t found in most offices. In January, Google employees were given a $1,000 tax-free bonus and 10% pay rise in order to stop staff from defecting to Facebook.

The low age at Facebook is not a surprise at all considering the CEO is only 27 years old. “We really don’t believe that you have to have a lot of experience to make a big difference”, Zuckerberg explained on the company’s career video website. “Look at me, right? I started this from college.”

Large scale tech companies are paid well into the six figures-no surprise considering all the well-paid engineers there are on staff. Also, the workers are paid 23% above the typical pay for the same type of work at a ‘normal’ tech company.

Something strange is going on, and Indian Android enthusiasts will find the news a little too good to be true – the brand new HTC Sensation is now available in India. Known to be HTC’s flagship Android device, sporting a 1.2GHz dual core processor and Adreno 220 GPU, part of Qualcomm’s new MSM8260 Snapdragon chipset.

The HTC Sensation has been listed on the popular Indian online retailer, Letsbuy.com, for Rs. 30,699, with a delivery time of 5 to 8 working days at the time of writing. Just like with the HTC Salsa and HTC Flyer, we expect HTC will officially bring the HTC Sensation to Indian retail shelves in a few days. At this pricing, the dual-core phone competes directly with the Galaxy S II, Samsung’s Android flagship phone.

Entertainment setup with PS3, Laptop and External HDD

My current setup with a PS3 connected to HDTV along with a one TB WD MyBook 1110 full with movies photos and TV serials connected to TV via USB and my XPS 1210 running windows 7 media server. The laptop and PS3 are connected through a wireless network and PS3 is connected to TV via HDMI.

This is my latest media setup which allows me to play games as well as movies, music and photos stored on my laptop without copying to PS3.

The wireless network is secure (WEP + MAC restricted). I choose which devices can connect to my wifi network.

My XPS runs a media server which my PS3 can easily detect over the wifi network. It can play almost all the music, photos and movies that are stored on the laptop. All I had to do was configure the laptop as a media server

My TV is Samsung series 4 (nothing too fancy) HDTV and can run the content on the 1 TB HDD via USB. This doesn’t need the PS3 to be switched on.

The audio out of TV is connected to my 2.1 channel speaker system. 2.1 is decent enough as I have a rented home and I just didn’t want to go through the hassles of setting up a 5.1

I consider this an ideal setup for me for the following reasons

1.       I hate to keep copying content from one device to another.

2.       It keeps it hassle free.

3.       As all my devices are mostly on I don’t have any issue.

4.       I can play, watch movies and listen to music from the comfort of my bed.

5.       The speakers are awesome. I can control the volume via the TV.
